Acupuncture can help with a wide range of conditions

The use of acupuncture as a complementary or integrative therapy for pain is on the rise. Acupuncture is traditionally thought to restore the normal flow of energy (qi) within the body. It has been demonstrated that acupuncture has multiple effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems in the modern era. By using functional magnetic resonance imaging, it has become possible to study the brain’s response to acupuncture. It is thought that acupuncture can help release endogenous opioids, serotonin, and norepinephrine  that can change pain perception by affecting nociceptors, inflammatory cytokines, and other physiologic mechanisms.

A very  comprehensive study (McDonald J, and Janz S, 2017) found evidence that acupuncture is effective for 117 conditions. There is a high level of evidence that lower back pain, osteoarthritis of the knee, migraine prophylaxis, headache (tension-type and chronic), insomnia, and constipation can be effectively treated with acupuncture, postoperative nausea & vomiting & pain.
